Since 1938, the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) has championed the rights and safety of rated seafarers working on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, and Canadian coasts. The union fights for fair labour standards and enforces Canadian cabotage laws, protecting its members and the nation’s shipping interests. Over time, SIU recognized the need for a dedicated recruitment website separate from its main platform. This new site needed to engage potential recruits by providing a clear picture of seafaring life and SIU’s core values. It also aimed to inspire the next generation to consider a rewarding career on the water.
Crafting the Seafarers recruitment website design required balancing professionalism with accessibility. The design needed to communicate SIU’s commitment to safety and fairness, while also showcasing the pride and camaraderie that come with life at sea. The goal was to create a polished, user-friendly resource that supports recruits at every stage—from initial curiosity to active engagement.
The website inspires and informs visitors by reflecting the purpose and pride SIU members share. We designed it as a direct communication tool to help users learn about the union, understand seafaring life, and connect with support easily.
Using a bold, dark palette, the site commands attention and feels professional. Nautical shapes and subtle textures reinforce the maritime theme without distracting from content. Photography highlights real experiences, showing the people and pride behind the work.
