The Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association (CMISA) serves as a national, not-for-profit organization championing Canada’s marine industry. They provide a unified voice for the sector, offering extensive support to members. Moreover, CMISA fosters collaboration across the country, encouraging growth and innovation in marine industries and shipbuilding.

Recognizing a need to modernize their brand identity, CMISA sought a refreshed CMISA identity that would strengthen their presence in an evolving market. The objective centered on creating a brand that clearly reflected CMISA’s mandate. Furthermore, the new identity needed to resonate with both current members and potential future stakeholders. It had to balance professionalism with approachability, capturing the essence of Canada’s marine sectors while projecting confidence and progress.

The CMISA identity design incorporates four meaningful elements that together tell a powerful story. To begin, the ship—intentionally nonspecific—represents the wide range of marine vessels, from coast guards to research ships, reflecting the industry’s diversity. Meanwhile, Polaris stands for tradition, guidance, and navigation, paying homage to seafaring heritage and the enduring spirit of exploration. Furthermore, the waves symbolize growth and opportunity within the marine and shipbuilding sectors; as they flow from the ship, they highlight CMISA’s role in driving industry support and forward momentum. Finally, subtly integrated in negative space, the iconic Canadian maple leaf emphasizes the marine industry’s vital contribution to Canada’s economy and its place within the national identity.

In designing the CMISA identity, we prioritized clarity, meaningful symbolism, and visual balance. As a result, the adaptable design works seamlessly across digital platforms, printed materials, signage, and promotional products. By thoughtfully weaving together heritage and innovation, the identity reflects CMISA’s leadership, future-focused vision, and commitment to fostering collaboration throughout Canada’s marine industry. This cohesive approach ensures a strong and lasting impression with all stakeholders.
