Serving since 1938, the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) is the most influential sailors’ union in the country. They provide advocacy, support and community to unlicensed sailors working aboard vessels on the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, and the east and west coasts, and the enforcement of Canadian cabotage and labour laws, and work hard to help ensure fair labour standards.
The SIU aims to ensure that Canadian seafarers’ jobs are safe, secure and stable. They are thousands of members strong, and growing. They knew they needed a refreshed online presence to resonate with a new generation of seafarers more effectively.
To project the SIU’s relevance and influence, we knew that their website needed a modernized visual and technical approach. Our goal was to create an engaging, contemporary and user-friendly site – one that highlighted the SIU’s vital role in the marine industry.
We developed a new design and interface for their website while visually enhancing their corporate brand. The design features a classic nautical theme, with large blocks of white and navy, as well as red highlights, building on the SIU’s corporate identity. Individual pages showcase genuine seafaring photography and other maritime imagery, creating easily recognizable markers for the site’s various sections.
The site uses parallax scrolling, which involves the background moving at a slower rate than the foreground. Each section’s written content slides over a corresponding header banner. This creates a three-dimensional effect as users scroll, building depth and visual interest into the pages.
To ensure that the website could serve effectively as a hub of timely information, resources and news for SIU members and prospective members alike, we divided its structure into logical sections, accessible through an organized top navigation bar. We also developed both English and French versions of the site and made certain that it is functionally responsive – accurately and proportionally – on any device.
The SIU’s new website reflects a brotherhood that is proud of their hard work and skill, building an atmosphere of community and dignity within the SIU. It successfully communicates their history and importance as a vital proponent of the seafaring industry and conveys their values of integrity, commitment and adeptness, to their members, the Canadian government and the general public.
