The website needed to convey a safe and welcoming environment. We incorporated large, colourful sections; smooth, sweeping shapes; service- and care-oriented imagery; and engaging typography, all to create an online space that was as friendly and accessible as possible. Working with MERIT’s established colour palette, each section features a unique colour and header shape. We introduced this as a subtle nod to inclusivity, as well as MERIT’s wide variety of services and partner agencies.
To enable MERIT to provide resources for their partners, we created a password-protected section on the website. Accessible via sign-in, this partners-only page includes a large variety of information, such as training guides, FAQs, a glossary of terms, and a repository of corporate documents and reports.
When MERIT asked us to include service- and care-oriented imagery on their new website, we selected a range of photos that feature educators, social workers, community service providers and healthcare professionals, all reflecting Ottawa’s diverse population. We were also mindful that at-risk or vulnerable individuals might visit the site, so we took care to avoid using imagery that could be triggering.
To enhance the sense of ease and comfort the website creates, our team added animations. For example, loading text or imagery appears in a smooth transition, rather than appearing abruptly onscreen.
