The Canadian Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Roadmap is the result of a multi-agency collaboration spearheaded by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Their goal is to determine the viability, development potential and implementation process of SMRs – which provide a simple, compact, highly-adaptable and economical form of electricity generation.
The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) partnered with us to create a video that explains the Roadmap’s purpose and identifies how SMRs will benefit Canada’s economy, innovations and climate goals.
We worked with the CNA to develop a storyboard from their script, ensuring that compelling, contextual imagery blended smoothly together to tell a relevant and engaging story. The video was a collaboration between the CNA and Roadmap initiative, so we ensured that its appearance respected both brands by incorporating their trademark dots.
To convey an energetic feeling throughout the video, we integrated subtly-moving text and animations, which created a sense of rhythm, as well as dynamic transitions that allowed for a smooth flow between segments. Hard transitions helped explain and underscore the Roadmap and its benefits. We developed a small motion graphic to help illustrate what SMRs look like, ensuring that the concept was general enough to avoid perceived favouritism among the hundreds of potential SMR designs.
After initially presenting the completed video to NRCan, we further developed it for translation into Ojibwe, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun (Baffin dialect) and Cree. This process involved adjusting the text formatting as well as the timing to account for varying reading times in different languages. The videos were then showcased throughout the respective Indigenous communities.
The SMR video expertly demonstrates the SMR Roadmap’s purpose and helps increase awareness about the initiative, providing individuals with a glimpse of Canada’s future energy solutions.
